Librarians have used the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for over 100 years to describe subject matter of the books, magazines, newspapers, maps, etc., in their collections.

When librarians automated their card catalogs in the 1980s, they also automated LCSH. That's when LCSH began to show its age.

My contributions to modernizing the Library of Congress Subject Headings are

improving the display of subject headings in online catalogs,

making the most out of the small amount of subject information that LCSH provides to catalog users,

determining the extent to which everyday people understand subject headings, and

suggesting enhancements of LCSH and to the subject information that the catalog provides to its users.
